ASEM stands for "Asia-Europe Meeting," which is an intergovernmental process established in 1996 to foster closer cooperation and dialogue between the countries of Asia and Europe. ASEM serves as a platform for Asian and European nations to engage in discussions on economic, political, cultural, and social issues of common interest, with the aim of promoting mutual understanding, collaboration, and partnerships.
The primary objective of ASEM is to enhance the relationship between the two regions through dialogue and cooperation. Member countries of ASEM include 27 European Union (EU) member states, 21 Asian countries, and 2 intergovernmental organizations—the EU and the ASEAN Secretariat. Through ASEM, leaders and officials from these countries gather every two years for summits to exchange views and address challenges in areas such as trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, education, and cultural cooperation.
ASEM facilitates bilateral and multilateral dialogues, working groups, and ministerial meetings on various topics, reinforcing regional integration and strengthening ties between Asia and Europe. The meetings and events organized within the ASEM framework aim to promote open and inclusive discussions, fostering mutual respect and understanding while advancing common interests.
