ILS stands for Instrument Landing System. It is a ground-based navigation aid used by pilots to guide an aircraft during the final approach and landing phase of a flight. The ILS provides precise guidance to ensure safe and accurate aircraft alignment with the runway, especially during low visibility or adverse weather conditions.
The system consists of several components including the localizer, glide slope, and marker beacons. The localizer is a high-frequency radio transmitter located at the far end of the runway. It provides lateral guidance to the aircraft, ensuring it remains aligned with the centerline of the runway. The glide slope component, usually positioned adjacent to the runway, provides vertical guidance by emitting a radio beam at a predetermined angle. Pilots use this beam to adjust the aircraft's descent rate and maintain the appropriate glide path towards the runway.
The ILS also incorporates marker beacons, which are radio transmitters located at specific distances from the runway threshold. These beacons emit distinctive signals that alert pilots as they pass certain points during the approach, providing them with additional situational awareness.
