Acleistocardia is a medical term that refers to a rare congenital heart malformation characterized by the absence of a left-sided opening or orifice between the chambers of the heart. The term is derived from Greek roots, with "acleisto" meaning closed or absent, and "cardia" meaning pertaining to the heart.
In a typical human heart, there are four chambers: two atria and two ventricles. The atria are responsible for receiving blood from the veins, while the ventricles pump the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. However, in individuals with acleistocardia, the left-sided chamber openings, such as the left atrioventricular valve or the aortic valve, are completely absent or closed.
This condition leads to an altered blood flow pattern within the heart, which can result in significant cardiac abnormalities and associated complications. Acleistocardia is often detected in the prenatal stage, during routine ultrasound examinations. It is considered a severe and life-threatening cardiac defect that requires immediate medical attention.
