Alkeran is a pharmaceutical drug classified as an alkylating agent, specifically a nitrogen mustard analogue. It is the brand name for melphalan, which is commonly used in the treatment of various types of cancer, most notably multiple myeloma.
Melphalan works by interfering with the DNA of rapidly dividing cells, ultimately leading to the destruction of cancer cells. It accomplishes this by adding an alkyl group to the DNA molecule, which causes cross-linking within the DNA strands. This cross-linking disrupts the normal replication and transcription processes of the DNA, impairing the cancer cells' ability to multiply and survive.
Often administered intravenously or orally, Alkeran has been found effective in reducing tumor size, slowing the progression of cancer, and improving patients' survival rates. Its wide use is attributed to its efficacy and relatively moderate side effects compared to other chemotherapy drugs.
