ARMM stands for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. It is a parliamentary region in the Philippines that was established to provide self-determination and self-governance for the Muslim population in Mindanao, the southernmost major island in the country. The ARMM was created under the Philippine government's efforts to address historical, cultural, and religious differences in the region, aiming to promote peace and development in the predominantly Muslim areas of Mindanao.
The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao has its own regional government headed by an elected governor and a legislative assembly composed of representatives from specific districts and sectors within the region. It has the authority to govern itself and make decisions on matters such as agriculture, economic development, education, health, and infrastructure within the limits defined by the Philippine Constitution.
The region is composed of five provinces: Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, as well as the cities within them. These areas have a significant Muslim population and a rich cultural heritage influenced by Islam, making the establishment of the ARMM crucial in recognizing and preserving their distinct identity.
While the ARMM operates autonomously, it still maintains its ties to the national government of the Philippines. The relationship between the national government and the ARMM is characterized by cooperation and coordination, ensuring that national policies and programs are disseminated and implemented within the region while respecting its unique circumstances and needs.
