Ascariasis is a medical condition characterized by an infection with the parasitic roundworm known as Ascaris lumbricoides. It is considered one of the most common helminthic infections worldwide, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene practices.
The infection occurs when individuals ingest the eggs of the Ascaris lumbricoides through contaminated food, water, or soil. Upon entering the body, the eggs hatch in the intestines and the larvae migrate to the lungs through the bloodstream. Once in the lungs, the larvae mature further and ascend the respiratory tract, before being swallowed and reaching the small intestine where they develop into adult worms.
The symptoms of ascariasis vary depending on the severity of the infection. Mild infections may cause no symptoms, while heavy infestations can result in abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, and fatigue. In children, severe cases may lead to malnutrition, stunted growth, and impaired cognitive development. In rare circumstances, the worms may obstruct the intestinal tract, leading to bowel obstruction.
Diagnosis of ascariasis typically involves microscopic examination of stool samples for the presence of Ascaris eggs. Treatment options include medications that kill the parasites, such as albendazole or mebendazole. Proper sanitation, personal hygiene, and the use of clean water sources are essential in preventing the spread of ascariasis.
