Etymology of BERARDIUS
The etymology of the word "Berardius" can be traced back to the French surgeon and anatomist Pierre-Joseph Van Beneden (1809-1894), who initially named the genus after the French naturalist Jean Louis Marie Bertrand ("Le Baron de Berard"), who had studied marine mammals.
