CapetoCairo refers to a grand imperial vision of a continuous trade and transportation route that would stretch from Cape Town in South Africa to Cairo in Egypt. The term originated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when European powers, primarily Britain and later Germany, sought to establish a colonial dominion over Africa. The vision emerged amidst the so-called "Scramble for Africa" as European nations aimed to exploit the continent's resources and establish political control.
The CapetoCairo idea encompassed the notion of uniting the British territories in Southern Africa, such as the Cape Colony and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), with existing or potential colonization efforts further north in East and West Africa. It also aimed to facilitate trade and transportation along this vast corridor, promoting economic integration and consolidating European dominance over Africa. This ambitious project involved constructing railway lines, telegraph lines, and other infrastructure essential for connectivity and control.
However, the CapetoCairo dream was only partially realized, as significant sections of the envisioned trade route remained undeveloped due to geographical challenges, political obstacles, and local resistance.
