DADT is an acronym that stands for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." It is a policy that was implemented by the United States military from 1993 to 2011 regarding the service of homosexual individuals. The policy prohibited military personnel from asking about an individual's sexual orientation, and in turn, lesbian, gay, and bisexual service members were expected not to openly disclose their sexual orientation.
The rationale behind DADT was to create a compromise between the military's desire to maintain unit cohesion and morale, while also acknowledging the presence of gay individuals in the armed forces. It aimed to prevent discrimination and harassment by allowing these individuals to serve, as long as their sexual orientation was not made public or became a cause for investigation.
However, DADT received significant criticism for its discriminatory nature and the resulting discharge of thousands of personnel due to their sexual orientation being revealed. Critics argued that it violated the rights of gay individuals to serve openly and equally in the military, and that the policy created a hostile and divided environment that hindered morale.
DADT was eventually repealed in 2011 through the signing of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act, which ended the policy and allowed gay and lesbian service members to serve openly without fear of being discharged based on their sexual orientation.
