Didymalgia is a medical term referring to the condition characterized by pain or discomfort in the region of the testicles, also known as testicular pain. The term is derived from the Greek words "didymos," which means testicles, and "algos," which means pain. Didymalgia can occur in one or both testicles and may range in severity from mild discomfort to intense, debilitating pain.
There are various causes of didymalgia, including trauma or injury to the testicles, infection, inflammation, testicular torsion (a twisting of the testicle that cuts off its blood supply), epididymitis (inflammation of the coiled tube behind the testicle), hernia, kidney stones, or varicocele (an enlargement of veins within the scrotum). Sometimes, the cause of the pain may remain unidentified.
The symptoms of didymalgia may include a dull ache, sharp or stabbing pain, sensitivity or tenderness in the scrotum, swelling, redness, or general discomfort. Depending on the underlying cause, additional symptoms like fever, urinary symptoms, or abdominal pain may also be present.
Treatment for didymalgia depends on the cause and severity of the condition. It may involve conservative measures such as pain management, rest, application of ice packs, and supportive underwear. In cases where an infection is present, antibiotics may be prescribed, or surgical intervention may be necessary for conditions like torsion or hernia.
