Distichiasis is a medical condition characterized by the abnormal growth of eyelashes from the Meibomian glands located on the inner surface of the eyelids. These extra eyelashes emerge from the same follicle as the normal eyelashes, leading to a double row of lashes. The condition can affect one or both eyes.
Distichiasis typically occurs as a congenital abnormality, meaning it is present from birth. However, it can also develop as a result of certain medical conditions or as an acquired disorder due to injury or inflammation of the eyelids. In rare cases, distichiasis may be hereditary.
Individuals with distichiasis often experience symptoms such as eyelid discomfort, irritation, and redness due to the abnormal eyelashes rubbing against the cornea. In severe cases, the cornea may become scratched, leading to corneal abrasions or ulcers. Chronic inflammation of the eyelids and recurrent eye infections can also be observed.
Treatment options for distichiasis include both conservative approaches and more invasive procedures. Conservative management may involve the use of lubricating eye drops or ointments to reduce friction between the lashes and the cornea. In more severe cases, surgical techniques such as cryotherapy, electrolysis, or laser therapy can be employed to permanently remove the extra eyelashes and prevent further damage to the eye.

In medical terminology, "distichiasis" refers to a condition where an extra row of eyelashes grows on the inner side of the eyelid, in addition to the regular set of eyelashes. This condition can cause discomfort, irritation, or damage to the cornea if the extra eyelashes come into contact with the eyeball.
