Eocarcharia, also known as "dawn shark," is a genus of extinct theropod dinosaur that lived approximately 112-100 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period. The name Eocarcharia is derived from the Greek words "eos," meaning "dawn," and "karcharos," meaning "jagged" or "sharp," referring to its serrated teeth. The specific name, Eocarcharia dinops, means "fierce-eyed dawn shark," highlighting its predatory nature and distinctive eyes.
Eocarcharia was a large carnivorous dinosaur, estimated to have reached a length of around 26-30 feet, with a weight of around 1.5-2 tons. It had a robust and elongated skull, equipped with sharp, serrated teeth and powerful jaws, enabling efficient prey capture and consumption. Its long, slender limbs and muscular body suggest it was a fast and agile hunter.
Fossils of Eocarcharia have been discovered in the Elrhaz Formation in the Republic of Niger, West Africa. These fossil remains include partial skulls and postcranial elements, providing valuable insight into its anatomy and lifestyle. Based on its anatomy, scientists believe Eocarcharia was a close relative of the famous African dinosaur, Carcharodontosaurus.
