Flaval ligaments, also known as ligamentum flavum or yellow ligaments, are fibrous connective tissues that exist within the spinal column. They are situated between the laminae of adjacent vertebrae, connecting each individual vertebra to the ones above and below it.
The name "flaval" originates from the ligaments' yellowish color, which is caused by high levels of elastin within their structure. These ligaments play a crucial role in maintaining the stability and integrity of the spinal column, as they help to form the posterior part of the spinal canal. In addition to providing stability, flaval ligaments aid in protecting and cushioning the delicate spinal cord, nerve roots, and intervertebral discs.
The flaval ligaments are elastic in nature, allowing for flexion and extension movements of the spine. Their elasticity enables them to stretch and recoil, thus contributing to the overall flexibility of the spinal column. However, excessive stretching or degeneration of these ligaments can lead to a narrowing of the spinal canal, a condition known as spinal stenosis, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the affected regions.
Due to their anatomical position and properties, flaval ligaments are of significant importance in spinal surgery. Surgeons must carefully manipulate and preserve these ligaments to ensure the stability of the spine during procedures such as laminectomies or discectomies.
