Ikhanaton, also known as Akhenaten, is a significant historical figure and a Pharaoh of ancient Egypt who reigned during the 18th dynasty, around the 14th century BCE. Born as Amenhotep IV, he later changed his name to Ikhanaton to reflect his religious reforms and his allegiance to the sun god, Aten.
Ikhanaton is best known for his radical religious revolution, which sought to establish Aten as the supreme and sole deity of Egypt, replacing the traditional polytheistic worship of Amun-Ra. He moved the capital city from Thebes to a new city he built called Amarna. During his reign, Ikhanaton ordered the construction of grand temples dedicated to Aten, where he and his wife, Queen Nefertiti, engaged in daily rituals and worship.
His religious ideas also extended to art and culture, as Ikhanaton initiated a new artistic style characterized by naturalistic portrayals, emphasizing human figures with elongated limbs, full lips, and heavy-lidded eyes. This style became known colloquially as the "Ikhanaton style" or the "Amarna art."
Despite his attempts to establish monotheism and suppress traditional religious practices, Ikhanaton's religious reforms were largely short-lived. After his death, his successors quickly reinstated the old polytheistic beliefs and removed nearly all traces of Ikhanaton's reign from official records, resulting in a scarcity of information and artifacts from that period.
