Inner planets, also known as terrestrial planets, are a group of four planets in the solar system that are located closer to the Sun than the outer planets. These inner planets consist of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, and are primarily characterized by their solid, rock-like surfaces, as opposed to the gaseous outer planets.
Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, is the smallest of the inner planets, and due to its proximity to the Sun, it experiences extreme temperatures and has a thin atmosphere. Venus, often referred to as Earth's "sister planet," is similar in size and structure but has a thick atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide, resulting in a hostile environment with blistering heat and high-pressure conditions.
Earth, the third inner planet and the one we inhabit, is unique among the inner planets as it supports life with its diverse ecosystems, abundant water, and breathable atmosphere. Mars, the fourth and outermost inner planet, is also known as the "Red Planet," owing to its reddish appearance due to iron oxide (rust) on its surface. Mars has a thin atmosphere and cold temperatures, and although it is currently uninhabitable, it has been a primary subject of scientific interest for potential future human colonization.
The inner planets stand apart from the outer planets primarily due to their solid compositions and proximity to the Sun. They generally present rocky terrain, lack significant ring systems or distinct moons, and have relatively smaller sizes and masses than the gas giants further away from the Sun.
