Under the ISPS regime, ships and ports are required to designate a security officer and develop security plans covering areas like access control, personnel identification, restricted areas, and security communication. Ships sailing internationally are also required to carry a Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) for immediate reporting of security threats or incidents.
Compliance with the ISPS Code is mandatory for all ships, including passenger vessels, cargo ships, and mobile offshore drilling units over 500 gross tonnage, as well as port facilities that serve such vessels.
