MDG stands for Millennium Development Goals. It refers to a set of eight globally agreed-upon objectives established by the United Nations (UN) in the year 2000, with a target completion date of 2015. MDGs were specifically designed to guide and prioritize efforts made by countries and international organizations to address major global development challenges.
The eight prime objectives of the MDG initiative include eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, universal primary education, gender equality and women empowerment, reduction of child mortality, improvement of maternal health, combatting HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability, and developing a global partnership for development.
MDGs are designed to be measurable and quantifiable, allowing for progress to be easily tracked and assessed. The initiative includes specific targets to be achieved within the designated timeframe for each goal. Over the years, the MDGs have gained increasing recognition and support, mobilizing global attention towards critical areas of development.
The MDG framework has served as a guiding tool for governments, non-governmental organizations, and international institutions to align their efforts, policies, and resources towards achieving sustainable development. After the 2015 deadline, the replacement for MDGs, known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), were set by the UN to build upon the achievements and address the shortcomings of the earlier initiative.
