Laumontite is a mineral that belongs to the zeolite group. It is a hydrous calcium aluminum silicate mineral with the chemical formula CaAl2Si4O12·4H2O. Laumontite was named after its type locality, the Laumont quarry in Laumont, France, where it was first discovered in the 18th century.
In terms of its physical characteristics, laumontite typically forms in prismatic or tabular crystals, often occurring in clusters or as aggregates. It is usually colorless, but it can also be found in shades of white, yellow, pink, or green. The mineral is transparent to translucent and has a vitreous to pearly luster. Laumontite has a relatively low hardness of around 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale.
Laumontite is commonly found in hydrothermal veins and cavities associated with volcanic rocks, as well as in regional metamorphic rock formations. The word "Laumontite" is derived from the name of the French mineralogist, François Pierre Nicholas Gillet de Laumont (1747-1834). Laumontite was first discovered by Laumont in France, and the mineral was named in his honor.
