Mekruh is an Arabic term used in Islamic jurisprudence to describe actions or behaviors that are discouraged or disliked, but not explicitly forbidden or sinful. Derived from the root word "karaha," meaning "to dislike" or "to be averse to," mekruh refers to actions that are considered blameworthy or better to avoid, although they do not incur any direct punishment or sin.
In Islam, there are three degrees of mekruh, classified as mekruh tahriman (disliked to the point of prohibition), mekruh tanzihan (disliked but not necessarily prohibited), and mekruh ehtiyatan (disliked as a precautionary measure). These categories help provide a better understanding of the level of discouragement associated with particular actions.
Mekruh acts are not to be confused with haram (forbidden or prohibited) acts, as mekruh actions do not carry the same level of severity or spiritual consequences as forbidden actions. While performing mekruh actions is not recommended, they do not entail direct punishment or sin, and individuals are not obliged to make up for them through atonement or expiation.
It is worth noting that opinions regarding what constitutes mekruh can vary among Islamic scholars, as certain actions may be deemed mekruh by some scholars and permissible by others.
