Mesoplast is a term used to describe a specific geological period that falls between the Paleozoic and Cenozoic eras, lasting from approximately 320 to 145 million years ago. It is characterized by significant changes in the Earth's climate, as well as geological and biological transformations. The Mesoplastic era is often referred to as the "Age of Reptiles" due to the dominance and diversification of reptilian species during this time.
The climate during the Mesoplast was generally warm and humid, with extensive forests covering large parts of the land. This period witnessed the evolution and proliferation of various reptilian groups, such as dinosaurs, crocodilians, and flying reptiles. It also saw the emergence of early mammals, which coexisted with the reptiles but were not yet as dominant.
In terms of geological events, the Mesoplast was marked by the formation and breakup of supercontinents, including Pangaea and Gondwana. This led to significant shifts in landmasses and the opening of new ocean basins. Volcanic activity was relatively high during this period, contributing to the alteration of the Earth's surface.
The Mesoplastic era came to an end with the mass extinction event known as the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. This catastrophic event resulted in the extinction of numerous reptile species, including the non-avian dinosaurs, and paved the way for the rise of mammals in the subsequent Cenozoic era.
