NAFAL, also known as Nawafil, is an Arabic term commonly used in Islamic context to refer to the voluntary prayers performed by Muslims in addition to the obligatory daily prayers (Fard). These additional prayers are considered as acts of devotion and are not obligatory, but are highly recommended to obtain additional spiritual benefits and closeness to Allah.
The word "nafal" itself is derived from the Arabic root "n-f-l" which means "to add" or "to increase." Thus, NAFAL prayers serve as an augmentation to the obligatory prayers, allowing individuals to go beyond the minimum requirements of worship and further enhance their connection with the divine.
NAFAL prayers can be performed at any time of the day, except during certain forbidden periods such as after the Fajr (dawn) prayer until sunrise and after the Asr (afternoon) prayer until sunset. It is believed that NAFAL prayers carry numerous rewards and blessings, and can provide spiritual purification, seek forgiveness, and offer additional ways to show gratitude and devotion to Allah.
Furthermore, NAFAL prayers are highly encouraged to be performed in the mosque, although they can also be offered individually at home or other places of worship. While there are specific NAFAL prayers such as the Tahajjud (night prayer) and Witr (odd prayer), individuals have the flexibility to engage in any inclusive acts of worship as NAFAL prayers, as long as they are in alignment with the teachings of Islam.
