Neons refer to a family of noble gases found in Group 18 of the periodic table, characterized by their distinctive fluorescent, glowing colors when exposed to an electric current. The term "neon" specifically designates an iconic gas element, denoted by the atomic number 10 and chemical symbol Ne, which exhibits a distinct reddish-orange hue when excited.
Neons hold a low reactivity and are known for their stability due to their complete valence electron shells. They are chemically inert and do not readily form compounds with other elements. Furthermore, their low boiling points and low densities contribute to their widely recognized use in various lighting applications.
In popular culture, the term "neons" often refers to neon signs or neons lights, which utilize the unique optical properties of these noble gases. Neon lighting consists of a sealed glass tube filled with gas, typically neon or other noble gases such as argon, xenon, or krypton, at low pressure.
