Orthisina is a term that refers to a subclass of extinct marine brachiopods, which are a type of invertebrate animal. Brachiopods are characterized by having a hinged shell enclosing their soft bodies and are commonly known as lampshells or lamp shells due to the resemblance of their shells to ancient oil lamps.
The Orthisina subclass is a distinct group within the larger class of brachiopods, and it includes various species that existed predominantly during the Paleozoic era. These creatures were characterized by having biconvex shells, meaning the shells were convex on both sides, and a hinge structure that allowed them to open and close. The shells of Orthisina brachiopods often exhibited symmetrical patterns, with ribs or ridges radiating from a central point or along the hinge line.
Like other brachiopods, Orthisina had a unique feeding method. They possessed a lophophore, a crown-shaped structure covered in ciliated tentacles, which they used to filter food particles from the water. This allowed them to extract nutrients and sustain themselves as filter feeders.
