In these crustaceans, females lay their eggs on specially adapted structures called ovigerothecae, which are essentially brood pouches located on their pleopods or swimmerets. Once the eggs are attached to the ovigerothecae, the female uses her ovigerons to manipulate and protect the developing eggs.
Ovigerons possess several unique characteristics that make them suitable for their reproductive role. They are typically elongated and have a claw-like shape, allowing the female to grasp and cradle the eggs securely. Additionally, the surfaces of ovigerons often contain fine hairs or spines, which aid in preventing the eggs from being dislodged.
In various decapod crustaceans, such as crabs and lobsters, ovigerons also play a vital role in oxygenating the eggs. They possess fine, filamentous structures known as pleopodal gills, which facilitate gas exchange, ensuring a sufficient oxygen supply to the developing embryos. This feature is particularly important since the ovigerothecae tightly encase the eggs, restricting direct contact with the surrounding water.
