Paroditis, also known as parotitis, is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the parotid glands, which are the largest salivary glands located on both sides of the face, just below and in front of the ears. This condition is often caused by an infection, most commonly by a virus, such as the mumps virus.
The inflammation of the parotid glands in paroditis results in swelling, tenderness, and pain in the affected areas. Other symptoms may include difficulty in opening the mouth, chewing, and speaking, as well as a dry mouth and a foul taste. Sometimes, paroditis can lead to the production of excessive saliva. In severe cases, the infection may spread to other salivary glands, causing further complications.
Paroditis is highly contagious and can be transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets or saliva from an infected person. The condition is most commonly seen in children and young adults who have not been vaccinated against the mumps virus.
Treatment for paroditis typically involves managing the symptoms and addressing the underlying cause. This may include rest, pain relief medications, warm compresses to reduce swelling, and adequate hydration. In cases where the infection is due to a bacterial cause, antibiotics may be prescribed. Vaccination against the mumps virus is highly effective in preventing paroditis.
