Posada is a Mexican and South American tradition that refers to a pre-Christmas celebration. The term "posada" literally translates to "inn" or "lodging" in English. The event generally takes place in the nine days leading up to Christmas, known as "Las Posadas." It represents the biblical journey of Mary and Joseph seeking shelter in Bethlehem.
During a posada, participants reenact the journey of Mary and Joseph by going from house to house, symbolizing their search for lodging. The participants split into two groups: one group represents Mary and Joseph, while the other group acts as the "innkeepers." The procession typically involves singing traditional songs and carrying images of Mary and Joseph, often accompanied by musicians.
At each house, the group representing Mary and Joseph asks for lodging, while the innkeepers refuse them. The dialogue between the two groups is known as the "pide y da" (ask and give). Finally, at the last house, which represents the stable in Bethlehem, the innkeepers welcome Mary and Joseph, and everyone sings songs of celebration.
Posadas also include festive decorations, such as piñatas, Christmas lights, and nativity scenes, known as "nacimientos." Traditional foods and beverages are often served, including tamales, ponche (a hot fruit punch), and buñuelos (fried dough). Posadas serve as a time of community, reflection, and celebration, bringing people together to commemorate the story of the Nativity and the journey of Mary and Joseph.
