These small, bell-shaped organisms are commonly found in freshwater environments, such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers. They exhibit a distinctive swirling or rotating motion, giving rise to their name, which is derived from the Latin word "vortex," meaning whirlpool or vortex.
Vorticels are composed of a stalk and a cup-shaped body or bell. The stalk firmly attaches the organism to surfaces, such as aquatic plants, rocks, or debris. From the upper end of the stalk, the bell extends outwards, consisting of a thin outer layer, called the pellicle, enclosing the cytoplasmic content.
Cilia, which are fine, hair-like projections, cover the outer surface of the bell and play a crucial role in locomotion. By coordinating their rhythmic beating, these cilia create water currents that propel the vorticels in a spinning motion. This motion helps to sweep food particles and small organisms towards the organism's mouth, located at the base of the bell.
Vorticels primarily feed on bacteria, algae, and other microscopic organisms suspended in the water. They utilize a specialized structure called the cytostome to engulf and ingest their prey. Vorticels reproduce asexually by a process known as binary fission, where the parent organism divides into two identical daughter cells.
