Eye movement abnormalities, such as crossed or misaligned eyes (strabismus) and involuntary jerking eye movements (nystagmus), may also be present.
MLIV is caused by mutations in the MCOLN1 gene, which provides instructions for the production of a protein called mucolipin-1. Mutations in this gene disrupt the normal transportation of molecules within lysosomes, leading to the abnormal accumulation of lipids and carbohydrates.
